What is a typical day at Camp Hudson?

Within this daily structure, our youngest campers have time to tinker with several fun interludes within each Tinkering, Nature or Making session while our older campers have the opportunity to get into FLOW. During play break, campers have a plethora of choice including working on their own project, building with Legos, reading a book, playing games outdoors, running around the sprinklers, exploring, etc.

What is a typical week at Camp Hudson?

Each week at Camp Hudson has a unique theme. On Mondays, we introduce the week's challenge, introduce some big ideas out there in the world as inspiration, and teach kids how to use real tools. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, we play, think up lots of creative ideas, work together, build, test our ideas, and play some more. Friday afternoons we host an exhibition to show parents, Andrus residents and members of the community our fabulous work.

Health Forms

Please send in your child's annual Health Appraisal form (including immunization schedule) completed by your child's doctor within the past year. The form you send into your child's school works great. (Please note, because we are located within a nursing home, all children attending Camp Hudson must be vaccinated.)

Lunch at Camp

Campers at Camp Hudson bring snack and lunch from home to eat at camp. Packing your camper an ample, nutritious lunch makes for a fun, well-supported day at camp. Please be aware we are a nut-free camp. (If you do send in a sandwich that may look like peanut butter, please label the sandwich or let your child know that it is a nut-free sandwich.)

Daily Packing Checklist

  • Refillable water bottle labelled with your child's name
  • A change of clothes and towel (for playing in the sprinklers)
  • Sunscreen and bug spray already applied (plus extra for later in the day)
  • Rain gear for rainy days

You can download and print this handy checklist for your fridge.

Wild Playspace

IMG_4799.jpg

At Camp Hudson, we embrace the theory that free, unstructured play is vital for children. Beyond our picturesque lawn, we have a magical enclave in the woods known as our Wild Playspace. We see it as an antidote to our hurried lifestyles and digital distractions as well as a great way to cut loose and have just the right dose of adventure and risk in play. Given summer is high tick season, we’re also aware that some parents may not feel comfortable having their children play in the woods and we respect that. We are opening up the Wild Playspace for one hour at the end of the day during Choice Time. Only students whose parents return this completed waiver will have the option to go to the Wild Playspace. Given the plethora of Choice Time options include running around the sprinklers, making or building, playing games, relaxing and reading, etc., we don’t believe children will feel they are missing out by not going to the Wild Playspace.

Tick Prevention

To prevent tick bites, please consider using inspect spray containing DEET or treat your child's clothes with Permethrin. For trips to the Wild Playspace, we recommend children wear light-colored clothes with long pants tucked into socks and long-sleeve shirts tucked into pants. Also, it's best if hair is tied up and a hat is worn.

We will check your children for ticks daily, but we recommend that all children have a thorough tick check and bathe when they come home from camp each day.  Download this Tick Workbook from NYC Health and learn all about ticks with your children so everyone knows what to look for this summer.

Before & After Camp Care

We will offer Before Camp Care from 8:30 - 9:30 am and After Camp Care from 4:30 - 5:30 pm. The cost is $12.50 per hour. We cannot guarantee last-minute requests for extended hours care, but we will try our best. Please submit the dates that you require Before or After Camp Care and we will email you an invoice as confirmation.

Financial Assistance

This year Camp Hudson is creating the Camp Hudson Fund to help provide assistance to families who strongly believe in our camp philosophy and mission, but cannot afford to send their child/ren to camp. The maximum amount of aid possible is 25% off of tuition. If this might make camp financially feasible for your family, please proceed with an application.
